Basic Steps to Avoid Misplaced Documents

Basic Steps to Avoid Misplaced DocumentsLife was simple when we were young. We didn’t worry about misplaced documents; our important “treasures”  were safely tucked away in a pretty box or little boy’s jean pockets.

Now, as adults, we gather more papers, more numbers to remember, more people needing information from us. Life doesn’t stay simple, does it?

Homemaking and caregiving isn’t just meeting physical needs.

We might help loved ones (and ourselves) avoid heartache as family circumstances change. It is easy to get so busy with the daily grind that we overlook critical details. A little time and attention now will save stress and often dollars in the end.

Misplaced documents can prove costly.

When a loved one passes away, if insurance policies and other records are stuck in a box or drawer “somewhere”, they will be overlooked when needed most.

Millions of dollars go unclaimed due to neglect.

The New York Times recently reported hundreds of millions of unclaimed dollars every year. Most belong to beneficiaries who did not realize policies existed when a loved one died.

You will benefit with these tips and a little time.

While this may seem overwhelming right now, scheduling just thirty minutes a day will make it a doable project for you with rewards in abundance.

#1 Organize — begin today!

Simply begin by putting all your important files in one place. Start with a small filing box (or large one for me.) An empty drawer will help get everything in one place in the beginning; then you can work more efficiently—and faster!

#2 Determine a permanent storage place.

A small waterproof, fireproof safe is large enough for most households. You may feel more secure getting a safe deposit box at your bank. Be sure someone can access it later if you are not able to do so. In addition to original documents, include a list of all policies, account numbers, birth and marriage certificates, and any important financial information.

#3 Evaluate each item.

For instance, in working on your home insurance policies, is your latest copy up-to-date? Is it adequate? Do you need to make changes? Do you have birth certificates for each member of your household? Are account numbers for credit/debit cards in this file? Include the phone numbers to call if lost or stolen.

#4 Who will need access to this information?

Your spouse? Your children? Attorney? Will they know where to find the information if needed? Be careful as you choose a trusted family member or friend for this important responsibility.

#5 Keep all items up-to-date.

Set a definite time each year to review this file and up-date any policies or records. Make sure any legal paperwork is correct; contact an attorney if you have any questions about the legality of any documents, especially those having to do with healthcare, mortgages, etc.

#6 This will prove time well spent.

Yes, I know! This will take time—maybe a lot of time you feel you do not have. However, the time and frustration you will be saving yourself and others when these things are needed will be worth it.

Trust me on this one. I’ve been there!

How I Benefited From Home Vacation While Working

Posted on July 24, 2016 by adminJuly 29, 2016

A “home vacation”? Last week I challenged you to considerhome vacationvacation while working an affordable vacation, when a “real” vacation seemed out of reach. We looked at how daily demands of caregiving, family, working outside the home, time, and resources left little time for our own basic needs.

You were asked to identify your greatest need of a vacation.

I trust you discovered for yourself what things tug heavily on your heart. Today, I will tell you what was on my list and how I handled my vacation. Next week I will give you specifics so you can do the same. And YES, you can no matter what your circumstance.

The cost and very surprising big rewards of my vacation.

The cost spent on travel, extra food, and entertainment was zero. The rewards are still coming in. I am calmer, happier, more enthusiastic than I have been in years. My house feels, smells and looks clean, yet much more needs done. My work and writing is on schedule and on target. Big bonus: I tried some new recipes and even lost a couple of pounds. Yes!

When you are tired, everything seems larger than life.

A month ago, when I sat down to rest at days’ end, “little” things loomed over me. There was an endless list of unfinished work. Doing fun projects was out of the question. I began by listing things that bugged me. My list will not seem like such a big deal to you. It was to me: it hindered my work and eventually affected my attitude. Your list will be different as you reflect on your life and your personal needs.

Here is a portion of my list:

Seeing the same photos/wall hangings year after year (adding to-never taking down);  Dark smoky streaks on the fireplace brick (most likely not noticed by others);  Stacks (boxes) of good magazines and newspapers unread;   Craft and coloring books purchased last year; still not opened;  Growing list of cards I wanted and needed to send; important calls I should make;  Patio chairs needing a little paint and cushion covers;  Cobwebs hanging from the ceilings (spray glitter?);  Baby kittens starving for attention;  Roses and flowers needing weeded; beautiful bouquets that never got picked!

When my “vacation” began, I chose a short-term project first.

I began with the fireplace because its grubby face greeted me every morning. No one seemed to know how to clean the brick as it got darker each year. Bravely I grabbed a bottle of Dawn, stiff brush, roll of paper towels, and went to work, even cleaning the hearth. Beautiful! Now, if that doesn’t sound like vacation to you, wait until you scratch your itch! That one small accomplishment gave me the will to continue.

My second project took several days (working a little each day as time allowed).

I tackled the photos and pictures. I pulled them all from walls and shelves throughout the house; emptied the frames and stacked the photos. Next I chose only the pics that I personally wanted to showcase. I dug out my photo albums, favorite Scripture clippings and new collage frames I had purchased years ago. One wall has three pages from our wedding and first year as a family. Now, when I am overwhelmed with life, I can refresh at my photo galleries in each room and remember the goodness of God.

I visited old friends and made new ones.

I scheduled some of vacation time to visit far-away friends – pen in hand. I eagerly worked through my long list of people I needed to visit and encourage with a letter or card. It was uplifting to finally call or write so many of them each week!

I tried new recipes and spiced up old ones. I swept down the cobwebs, dusted the furniture, shook the rugs. It was fun! And so rewarding.

If this doesn’t sound like vacation to you, it’s been too long since you’ve experienced the pure joy of a job well done!

Next week, as I promised, I will give you the simple plan for your vacation. In the meantime, get to work on that list. Make it as long and detailed as you wish; there is some healing in simply writing down your wants and to-do list. Trust me on this because I was there!

Hugs,

Please comment; let me hear about the things you would like to do if you had the time. Praying for you as we journey together.

Caregiver Hope: Yearning for Greener Grass?

Posted on June 19, 2015 by adminOctober 25, 2016

Caregiver Hope: Yearning for Greener Grass?

Help, I’m drowning!

“…is your life full of difficulties and temptations? Then be happy, for when the way is rough, your patience has a chance to grow. So let it grow…when your patience is finally in full bloom, then you will be ready for anything, strong in character, full and complete.” (James 1:2-4, TLB)

Okay, so I admit it! I can almost see your expression as you read that verse. Your thoughts are running something like this:

“Hey, lady! The first part is correct. My life IS full of difficulties and temptations; and you don’t know the half of it. I’m at my wits end and no help in sight. You really expect me to find a blessing? And top that off by being happy?”

This week’s drastic weather changes have added to the daily stress of caring for family and others. Here in the Ozarks we can literally wade in our back yard and might consider building a boat. On the other hand, some of my readers would pay a big price to get a few drops of precious rain on their parched lands.

Some days are just plain too long!

I recall those days when the only blessing I could envision was my bed at night; that is, if I thought I would be able to muster the strength to get into it. Through the years I learned the value of identifying at least one blessing before I went to bed. Maybe my blessing was simply surviving another day. As time went on, a blessing might be remembering a soft smile when I kissed a cheek. Sometimes it was simply the smell of freshness on that last load of laundry for the day.

Close your eyes for even two minutes–yes, just TWO minutes! Sit up straight, breathe deeply and exhale slowly. Relax. Thank the Lord that He has promised never to leave you or forsake you. Thank Him for fresh air and freedoms and abilities to help others. Thank Him for His blessings.

News Flash: For You!

By the way, did you know that YOU are one of His blessings? Yes, you are!

As we continue this journey together, I trust I will be an encouragement to you; just a nudge to let you know you are not in this alone. Be assured I have prayed for each person reading this including you. Thank you for caring and sharing.

For more encouragement and practical help, consider working through the discussion guides in the second edition of MY MOTHER MY CHILD with a friend or family. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hugs,

Feel free to share this trailer with others who have not yet read MY MOTHER MY CHILD. Thanks.
