Cooking Substitutions for Almost Anything

Cooking Substitutions for Almost Anything

Momma rarely followed a recipe without making a few changes. Of course, I would come to realize as I grew older, many cooking substitutions were due to a meager pantry and tight budget.

I recall vividly as a teen baking a chocolate cake for her birthday. The rich chocolate icing was adorned with tiny pink roses and green leaves. It was beautiful if I say so myself.

However, one taste and you knew something wasn’t exactly right. Oh, everyone ate it; not a single person said anything about the unusual taste. That is, except my little brother. If you have siblings, you know how honest they can be!

Discovering we were out of shortening or lard, I had substituted hardened bacon grease. After all, it was grease – it should work as well. Take it from me, it pays to know good cooking substitutions.

For instance, did you know that when baking, you can replace one egg in every three with one tablespoon cornstarch? Follow this link to find out. Also, you’ll learn what to use when out of buttermilk or mayonnaise. And, wait until you the substitutions for gluten-free flour! Click here for more.

Do you know a good substitution for mayonnaise? Milk? Cracker crumbs? Honey? If so, you will find a wealth of information on this site featuring dozens of baking and cooking substitutions.

As I write this, we are faced with many of the issues Mother faced. Our economy and our lifestyles have changed over night. Running to the store every day or so may not be an option. Perhaps our challenging circumstances will require us to learn how to make do with what we have.

I would like to hear some of your favorite substitutions. Also, why not tell me some that haven’t been such good choices. I won’t tell (tee, hee)!

God’s Blessings are New Every Morning

God's Blessings are New Every Morning

Have you had moments when, in the midst of your trials, God simply gives you a hug? Perhaps, you long for one today. Absorb the truths from Psalms 27:13-14.

I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord!

If you want a truth to rely on, this is it. God’s love for you will never change. Regardless of your surroundings at the moment, God has you securely in the palm of His loving hand, and He will not let go.  Click here for more verses on God’s blessings.

Gods Creation Blesses My Heart

Picking a few wildflowers for this grouping, I spied a tiny patch of clover. Looking closer, it was filled with four-leaf clover with large petals. For me, it was a God-hug! I needed that!

How has your day gone today? No matter how stressful it may seem, God has a hug just for you. Here are some tips on finding His blessings on your life every day.

Learn to Count Your Blessings

I share this often. Close your eyes and breathe in the fresh air. Count your fingers and toes. Picture your loved ones — friends and family. Thank God for each of them. Pick a flower and observe the wonder of creation.

Just Stop It!

Seriously, if you tend to pick up on all the negativity around, just stop it! Listening to too much ‘news’ right now. Just stop it! Stressing over what is not getting done? Just stop it!

Meet Someone’s Need

Have you noticed that it’s the busiest people who seem always to find time to meet other’s needs? Do you know of a need God would have you meet? Trust me, it will be time well spent regardless of how busy you are.

Never Forget Who Really has the Last Word

Read the verse again! Our hope is in God; He is the only true hope we have. He loved you so much He sent Jesus Christ, His only Son, to suffer and die in your place. And He is the Victor. You can trust Him.

I pray for each of you receiving this letter; I pray for peace and love. I pray for safety and health; mostly I pray that Jesus Christ is as real to you as He is to me. Yes, I would lose all hope were it not for Him!

Hugs,

What gives you peace? Let me hear your stories. And, thank you to those who faithfully share this column with others! We all need extra God-hugs right now!

3 Reasons to Write About Life Now

3 Reasons to Write About Life Now

I wanna hug on my family!

You don’t want to write about life now? You can’t write? Your story’s not worth writing about?

I hear you! I’ve heard it before; I’ve said it before!

And now I say to you, you MUST write your story, and do it NOW!  Here are three valid reasons to grab a pen and paper and write.

#1 You are living a part of history, world-wide history!

You can tell a part of history no one else can tell. What’s happening in your life? How have things changed in your home? At least scribble a few lines about the best and the worst.

A five-year old was “cooking” breakfast with his colorful play dough. Over and over again he prepared and served what his customers ordered. Suddenly, without warning, his playful laughter ceased. Quietly he put everything away.  As he sadly walked away, he announced the restaurant could no longer serve meals. They had to close because of the “Bad Krony Stuff.”

From the very young to the oldest, there is a new normal. Consequently, our nation and our world will never be the same. We are living in the midst of historical times.

I want to go play with my friends.

#2 Writing your story will strengthen you.  Writing has been proven to be a benefit to your health. Something truly happens when your thoughts go from your brain through your hands as you write (or type) your feelings.

Writing releases tension as your thoughts are transferred to paper. We are more honest as we write out our feelings. This is especially true when we do not focus on the proper grammar or style.

It’s possible, in fact a very good thing, to have your thoughts take over the pen and fill the pages.

#3 Seeing your story unfold on paper will help resolve issues.

How has your work changed? Your pastime? Your relationships? What are you finding difficult? What has surprised you the most? How is your family life – really?

As you go back later and re-read some of your scribblings, you may notice your values perhaps have changed.  Something that was once a priority, may now be insignificant.

I want to go to church.

I firmly believe many families are pulling closer together. In fact, some parents are getting to know their children; not just as kids, but as individuals with feelings and dreams.

Perhaps God in His wisdom has set us all aside “for such a time as this.” Above all, spend quality time with Him.

Hugs,

Praying for you as you locate some paper and pens! Drop me a note; I’ll send you a journal! Let me know how this works for you … seriously.
